To the Editor-
Many people are familiar with our State Senator, Terri Bonoff - if for no reason but the fact that she has an inordinate amount of signs in our neighborhood. But what many do not know is WHY Terri Bonoff has all these signs, or, why she has the support of so many in our neighborhood.
Bonoff is a Democrat, but it is no mistake that she has been endorsed by a slew of strong Republicans. She is the ONLY Democrat in a contested race to be endorsed by both the TwinWest and Minnesota Chambers of Commerce; she has the support of former Gov. Arne Carlson; and she was recently awarded the prestigious, "Guardian of Small Business" Award by the National Federation of Independent Business.
As a Republican myself, I wondered why Terri won these endorsements over her opponent. Was it her background? She had a 20-year career as a Business Executive at Navarre Corp (we worked with her there), and TonkaToys. Was it her record? Terri often votes in favor of small business and is a leader in ed reform. Maybe. But most of all, I think it's the fact that Terri has a proven ability to work with both parties to get things done.
We support Terri because she focuses her efforts on making a difference, not staking a claim.

Terri is a Democrat. I'm wondering if Terri is a business owner? Did she own the companies discussed above? Where did she gain this small business accumen? What education reform of hers was passed in the last session that was signed by the governor? If he didn't sign, why? Does she support the governor's proposal to raise taxes? What will she do to reduce small business regulation? Brian, perhaps you know the answers to these questions? Please name all the slew of strong Republicans that endorse her? I don't think Carlson qualifies as a strong Republican.

David, did you recently move here from out of state? Governor Carlson was the two-term elected Republican Governor of Minnesota from 1991-1999. Before that, he was Minnesota State Auditor, a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and a member of the Minneapolis City Council, all as a Republican.
Unlike today's Republicans, Governor Carlson was a strong supporter of public education and of the University of Minnesota. Also unlike today's Republicans, he continuously worked across the aisle with Democrats and with other Republicans to actually get things done. Also unlike today's Republicans, when Governor Carlson left office he left both the University of Minnesota and the State of Minnesota in great financial shape.
The answers to all your other questions are available in the public record and on Senator Bonoff's web site. I suggest you educate yourself a bit before you come back here and again try to tear down people you know so little about.

No, I'm hardly new to the state. Typical liberal trying to tell people free speech is not welcomed. I have reviewed the voting record of your candidate. And, I usually ask questions I already know the answer to. Terri is wrong for our district. Carlson supports Democrats. I want Gaither as my Senator. I reject your suggestion, dipper. The "middle" is a fallacy. It's an excuse when nothing gets done. I congratulate Governor Carlson on his service. That doesn't mean I have to respect his endorsement in anyway, because, I don't. I support public education. I don't support massive debt in public education. I don't support spending that takes away from public education and adds debt. Light rail, for example. Spending and debt will become much better allocated with Republicans. It's scary how Terri doesn't even discuss jobs, nor do her supporters. You are all very busy reaching across the aisle. I don't support the political elite. I want new ideas. I want plans to pay down public debt. I want real school reform so we can be assured schools thrive. Not looking to the 1990s, like you, for that. But, you can still come back here and state your opinions, dipper.

I am noting the comeback theme here in Minnetonka. It's something like this.."You doesn't sound like youse are from these here parts. You best be gittin back on that horse and ridin out stranger." Meanwhile, since I have been here the value of my house has plummeted and my property taxes have increased quite a lot. Which reminds me: Vote Wahlstedt, Gaither and Stefan. Thank you.

Typical rhetoric from the Left. They can't win the argument, the moderators threaten to boot them if they start calling people names again, so they let their inner 3-yr old out and simply tell us all to 'just leave.' LOL
Thanks for finally admitting that you've lost the argument, Beavis. Say hello to Butthead for me :)

Dave, I think you might want to do some "fact checking" on your candidate. Your Republican friend, supported property tax increases and cut funds to education. SWLRT is NOT a good example of "debt" because the project is largely funded from outside (of the state) sources, first off, and it's just plain bad for business to not support the SWLRT. SWLRT is supported by over 3,000 businesses. I'm flabbergasted by Republican response to this proposal. Voting against SWLRT is bad for business. Moderates do exist, and they look for opportunities to support initiatives on both sides of the aisle. Vote Bonoff, the only moderate in this race.

Thanks, Brian. SWLRT annual operating costs are nearly $33,000,000 or about $11,000 per those 3,000 businesses your cite. I feel very good about my choice. Vote Gaither.

Wow, looked at www.davidgaither.com updated website. He sat on the Senate's K-12 finance committee. That's a big plus. I don't see where he ever voted for property tax increases as that is done at the local level. And,he says lanes before trains. I'm glad I had a new look at the website. Vote Gaither.

Thanks, Brian. I'm comfortable with my research and fact checking. I understand education funding very well. I also am well versed in the details of the property tax system. SWLRT is estimated to cost $33 million annually in operating costs. Fares will not cover much of that and using your 3000 business number would end up costing each business $11,000 annually. If those 3000 businesses can guarantee they will sustain SWLRT, I am personally all for those businesses improving their businesses with their capital. I'm flabbergasted by nearly $17 Trillion in federal debt(some which would fund much of SWLRT construction), $8 Billion of MN State Debt(Not counting about $12-19 Billion of unfunded public pensions), about $12 Billion of reported or registered school district debt which is backed by the state(and ultimately assessed to affected property owners in the borrowing districts). The state's annual budget without federal payments is about $17 Billion. So, we start to see the gravity of the debt against the income, sales and other taxes the state is already collecting. Not bad for some guy just blogging in reply. I don't want any more moderates. These are real fiscal issues in need of serious debate and resolution. Vote Gaither.

So the fact that the Chambers of Commerce and the business community support SWLRT means nothing to you. And your "I don't want any more moderates" comment is telling, as are your comments here. Your "Take no prisoners, and compromise is evil" approach is exactly why our governments are dysfunctional.
Dave Lloyd

Compromise has lead to money printing that is funding deficits. Quite dysfunctional. SWLRT is the worst government has to offer as it is funded by money printed deficits. Go read www.JohnMauldin.com and come back. Fascinating article on debasing the currency debases society. We don't need sales taxes and income taxes from Brainerd and property taxes in Brooklyn Park funding $33 million of annual SWLRT costs. Business should build the train if it wants it. Riders should pay the operating costs. Deficit spending is not free money. Moderates will end up making us the economic prisoners. Raising taxes will not even remotely close these gaps. How do you compromise? Do you split a $1.5 Trillion federal deficit in half when instead you probably have to have the deficit growing below the rate of meager economic growth. What's evil, as you can read with further research, is the money printing benefitting the most wealthy. Your proposed federal deficit money, funded by federal reserve actions in part, is paying for a train for business. Politically, that can sound pretty evil fairly quickly. But, you used evil, not me. I'm just telling you your "moderates" will never be able to get us out of this mess and proof is they want to do even more "moderate" deficit spending.
Dave Lloyd

To continue, money is trust. Debase trust, debase society. And, the other point, whoever is closest to the money printing benefits the most. So, business gets the train while deficit spending raises taxes and eventually, money printing raises the cost of fuel, food, etc. on those least able to afford it.

Still think the point is evil?
