Plymouth City Manager Announces Retirement

Laurie Ahrens has worked for the City of Plymouth for 25 years and will retire this summer.

Laurie Ahrens announced her retirement at the April 23 Plymouth City Council meeting. Her last day on the job will be July 12. Her retirement will bring a decade as Plymouth city manager to a close and wrap up a long career in local government.

During her 35 years in municipal government, Ahrens has worked for three cities—Plymouth, Mankato and North Mankato—in seven positions. She has served the City of Plymouth for 25 years.

Ahrens’ career in Plymouth began in 1988, when she was hired as the city clerk. Eleven years later, she was promoted to assistant city manager. The City Council appointed her city manager in 2003.

Ahrens said that when the time comes to say good-bye it will be difficult.

“Much of my life has been devoted to this city, and leaving is no easy decision," she said. "I’ve had the opportunity to work with a city staff that is both talented and service-oriented, and City Councils comprised of caring and knowledgeable individuals, devoted to the community and supportive of staff.”

Ahrens added that Plymouth is a wonderful community by any number of measures—including thriving businesses, desirable neighborhoods and top notch schools.

"Our recent citizen survey indicated resident satisfaction levels that topped the metro area," Ahrens said. "And, it’s hard to beat being named the No. 1 Best Place to Live in the country. Everyone wants to play for a winner, and I have had the good fortune to do so."

The City Council will meet on May 14 to determine what process it will use to hire the next city manager.
