TONIGHT: Wayzata School Board's Working Session

The Wayzata School Board will meet Monday at 4:15 p.m. to review district initiatives.

Wayzata School Board members will be busy at their work session Monday night. Presentations about Kimberly Lane Elementary School, the Wayzata School District budget, school start times and boundaries, and tools for technology-driven learning will take up the majority of the meeting.

Kimberly Lane Elementary School Principal Gary Kipling will present his ideas for school improvement, including goals of increasing math proficiency among students.

“We are currently in the process of administering the electronic version of the MCA math tests,” Kipling said in school board documents.  “We will be able to get immediate feedback and determine which students are exceeding standards.”

Kipling will also review his goals of teaching empathy to students.

“From many informal conversations a need to teach empathy to students became a priority for Kimberly Lane,” he said. “A whole host of activities have happened this year and a detailed report will be given by students at the May Board meeting. “

Jim Westrum, executive director of finance and business for the school district, will discuss financial strategies and review the 2012-13 school year budget. Among the topics in his presentation, an increase in athletic and activity fees will be reviewed.

In addition to financial review, Westrum will present information about school attendance boundaries.

“The process to determine specific school attendance boundary changes is scheduled to begin this spring,” Westrum said in school board documents. “A representative committee…will meet to gather data and develop possible scenarios for changing boundaries.”

Technology Director Wade Phillips, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Shelly Nelson and Superintendent Chace B. Anderson will bring the most unique presentation to the board. The team will outline how to integrate the use of iPads into classrooms.

The group’s proposal includes planning, development and implementation of a modern learning environment through the use of district-provided iPads, according to school board documents
