Wayzata Schools See Largest Increase In Math For MCAs
Elementary and middle school levels see biggest increases in math for 2012 MCA results.
Wayzata School District has summarized its 2012 MCA results and how it compares to last year's and the state's results. The following information is a summary of that information:
The district has seen gains in math more than reading for the 2012 Minnesota Assessment, which comes from three state tests including the MCA, MCA-Modified and MTAS.
These tests measure how Minnesota students are doing on grade level academic standards in reading and math.
The largest increase from 2011 to 2012 in math was 19 percent in grade 8 and the greatest gains from last year to this year were in math at the elementary and middle school levels.
Compared to the 2011 results, the percent of students proficient on the 2012 mathematics accountability tests increased 5 percent at the elementary level (grades 3-5) and 11 percent at the middle school level (grades 6-8). These gains were slightly lower than the state at the elementary level and slightly higher than the state at the middle school level.
The percent of students proficient on the math accountability tests in high school (grade 11) increased by 1 percent while the statewide percent proficient decreased by 6 percent.
The districtwide overall results in reading were similar to previous years, but the largest increase was by 6 percent for eighth grade.
Compared to the 2011 results, the percent of students proficient on the 2012 reading accountability tests stayed the same at the elementary level, increased 2 percent at the middle school level (grades 6-8) and increased 3 percent in high school (grade 10). These gains were the same as the state at the elementary and middle school levels and slightly higher than the state at the high school level.
(Editor's Note: The results summarized above include all accountability tests, MCA/ MCA-Modified/ MTAS, and are analyzed by grade. For the annual report to the WPS Board of Education, data will also be analyzed by student demographic group.)

While I am a big fan of the Wayzata School District (when I moved to MN, I moved to where I live specifically for the school district for my child), I do have some observations.
My child attends an after school math program where they do about an hour of math a day, seven days a week, and the ratio of Indian (India) children to everyone else is probably something like 10+ to 1.
Also, there (at least it seems to me) appears to be more Indian children in my child's elementary school over the last few years (my perception of course could be faulty) and last year during teacher \ student conferences the teacher we were discussing math, after school math programs, and the teacher said that they were seeing, even in grade school a significant stratification taking place in math between Indian and Chinese children (in general) and everyone else.
So, I am curious if there will be any deeper dives into the math scores to see how much might be due to a demographic change, amount of formalized outside of school math work that is done, etc...
Not saying that the schools aren't great but perhaps there is more we can learn to help all students if we can dig deeper into why the scores are going up.
