Winter Storm Update in Plymouth: Delayed Recycling, Snow Total and Plowing Update

The storm March 4 and 5, dubbed Winter Storm Saturn by the Weather Channel, also caused several school closings and area accidents.

With several inches of snow falling in Plymouth Tuesday, March 5, closures, clearing, recycling collections and crashes were among issues for the day.

Snow Emergency Alert

The City of Plymouth issued a Snow Emergency Alert for residents in the community early Tuesday morning and again Tuesday afternoon. The second alert, issued at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, informed residents that a "second full city snow removal" in Plymouth will begin midnight March 6 in which all city streets will be replowed and an overnight drifting will be addressed.

"Please know that it can take 8-12 hours to plow the entire City," the city wrote in the alert.

As part of Plymouth's plowing procedures, residents are reminded "parking is prohibited on city streets after a 2 ½ inch snowfall," according to the Plymouth city website. "Parking may not resume on the street until it has been plowed curb-to-curb. Violators may be tagged and towed. In addition to parking restrictions related to snow plowing, Plymouth prohibits parking on city streets year-round from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m."

Hennepin County plows started out 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to a Hennepin County tweet, and will be out for the remainder of the day. 

Recycling Delayed

Recycling collections will be one day late in all areas of Plymouth this week due to Tuesday’s snowstorm, according to the Plymouth city website. Collections will take place from Thursday, March 7 through Saturday, March 9, according to the city.

Snow Status

As of 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Plymouth had 7.5 inches of snow, according to FOX 9 Chief Meteorologist Ian Leonard

A winter storm warning remained in effect until noon Tuesday and under a winter storm advisory until 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. 

The forecast for Wednesday, March 6, according to the National Weather Service, is: "Mostly sunny, with a high near 29. North northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the afternoon." 

Road conditions

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said the driving conditions were difficult and weather forecasters predict that snow will continue to steadily fall through late morning.

Several accidents were reported throughout Tuesday morning in the Twin Cities, including a spinout one Interstate 494 near Bass Lake Road. As of 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, the Minnesota State Patrol said troopers handled 122 crashes statewide and 144 vehicle off road/spin out incidents.

Closures

Snow and road conditions also prompted the closure of schools throughout Plymouth Tuesday, March 5 including Wayzata, Robbinsdale and Osseo School Districts as well as most private and charter schools.
