Youth Learn About Theater, Performing During Weeklong Plymouth Camp

Check out our video of the young performers in action and our interview with their instructor.

Before they go back to school, some youth are learning about stage presence, vocalizing, staging, choreography, and overcoming stage fright.

For the past week, children ages 6 to 11 are getting the chance to learn what it takes to be on stage at the Plymouth Black Box Theater. Their instructor, Allison Raney, has been teaching the weeklong youth drama camp for the past 10 summers in Plymouth.

Raney has a bachelor’s degree in music from Augsburg College. She teaches music lessons and acting workshops and is the youth choir director for a church in south Minneapolis.

The children are split into two different groups to learn about different aspects of performance, being in theater and drama throughout the week and then come together on the last day to put together a performance for family and friends in the Black Box Theater in the Plymouth Creek Center.

Children learn about what it's like to be on stage in front of people, how to perform with lights and music cues as well as dress up in costume for their scenes that range from singing and dancing to comedic skits and poem recitations.

Check out our video in which Raney talks about her work with the children and see the young performers in action.
