Minnesota Gardens Opening Former Linder's Stores In Minnesota

Minnesota Gardens Flower Marts recently announced it has purchased many of the old garden marts which had been owned by St. Paul, Minn.-based Linders. In October 2013, citing the loss of its line of credit, a poor spring and the recession, Dave Linder announced he was closing his family’s 103-year-old business before the end of the year.

Minnesota Gardens plans to open the stores sometime this month. “We will carry a much wider selection of culinary herbs, and while customers will continue to find their traditional favorites like the sweet basil, they will also find other flavorful varieties that may not have been offered by Linder’s flower marts previously like cinnamon basil, lemon basil or purple ruffle basil,” says Jennifer Buse, president of Minnesota Gardens. “The same holds true for the herbal selection overall: we’ll be bringing in curry, stevia, four different varieties of thyme, teas and more. Even if they are not used for cooking, they are lovely in a container garden and many herbs help in keeping pests at bay.

“With the increasing popularity of kale and other superfoods among juicing enthusiasts, we believe more people want to grow their own for several reasons: cost effectiveness, convenience and more nutrition.”

Buse also says the company is focused on bees, major pollinators and clean water, which means customers will find a large perennial section identifying the best plants to strengthen them. “We will also host special events and educational workshops ranging from eco-focused to design-focused topics,” Buse says.

“Moving forward, we will be expanding relationships with local growers that have adopted or are trending towards sustainable practices in their nursery production.”
