To the Editor:
Thank you to the people of Plymouth's House District 44A for voting. Our democracy depends on public participation in government and, once again, Plymouth had a very impressive turnout at 87 percent.
Thank you to my team who made this campaign possible. Together we visited every home in the district, whether Republican, Independent, Democrat or not party affiliated at all, because our campaign was about the people and public service, not political parties. There wasn't a door we walked by, a conversation we wouldn't hold nor a question we wouldn't directly answer.
Because of a great team, we made hundreds of phone calls, wrote letters, addressed thousands of envelopes and cards, dropped literature at doors, carefully installed signs (only where legally allowed and homeowner approved), managed maps and data, some brought food when we otherwise would have skipped meals, others waved signs in the cold and rain on Election Day and more.
Never once did I think this was about me. The team was not paid professional campaign staff nor did they have a candidate with a lifetime of professional campaign experience. This was a grassroots effort by people who love their community, have a deep commitment to public service and wanted something better for Plymouth. 23,600 people voted in our race. In the very early morning hours, we learned we were 607 (2.5%) or 304 (1.3%), depending on how one looks at it, votes short of being sent to the Capitol.
Now new work begins. The Legislature has already stated it will get to work on our most pressing issues including the state's budget deficit. I'm thrilled to see a focus on tax reform including a close look at $23 billion in hidden tax expenditures; something we highlighted on the campaign trail. Education, vital to a strong economy and healthy society, will become a priority once again, and we look forward to real solutions to job creation that include ROI analysis.
My team is made up of many who have and will also continue to serve the public in many ways.
For all of this, I am grateful, humbled and amazed.
