A 17-year-old Minneapolis teen has been charged with fleeing a police officer, a felony, in Fourth District Judicial Court.

Officers were dispatched Nov. 13 to 537 Meadow Lane North in Golden Valley on a burglary call. The resident at that address had called 911 at about 6:42 a.m. and described that while at home with her two small children she heard someone attempting to break into the house through a locked door.

The resident heard a window breaking at another entrance to the home, which is when she called 911 to describe what was happening. She reported seeing two people outside of her home; one was wearing a maroon hoodie.

The resident stated there was a black truck with silver rails on the bed of the truck and writing on the back window sitting in her driveway. A subsequent investigation revealed the black truck was stolen.

Upon arrival, officrs observed the black truck nearby at 15 Westwood Drive in Golden Valley. Officers saw two males in the truck. When officers activated emergency squad lights and ordered the occupants to get out of the truck, the driver of the truck drove around the squad card and went northbound on Westwood Drive.

Three people were recovered from the truck: the teen suspect, a 28-year-old male and 18-year-old male. The 17-year-old male suspect charged with fleeing police was found to be the one driving and wearing a maroon hoodie. He stated several times that he was a juvenile and nothing would happen to him. He also stated he would come back to the Golden Valley Police Department to laugh at them because he was not in custody.

The incident escalated after the truck drove away from police, according to the Golden Valley Crime Analyst Joanne Paul:

The suspects traveled westbound (through the park), south on Ottawa Ave N, and onto westbound Glenwood. The pursuit continued to westbound Hwy 55 into Plymouth and then northbound on Hwy 101 into Maple Grove. During the pursuit, one of the front tires on the stolen pickup...was blown and soon they were driving on the rim of the tire, causing sparks to fly from behind the vehicle. It was quite a sight for rush-hour commuters.

After 17 miles, the pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle left the road and the three suspects were taken into custody with the assistance of Plymouth Officer Bill Dane and his K9 partner, Odie. No one was injured during the pursuit, and we are happy to say all three suspects (one juvenile male and two adult males) have all been arrested and charges are pending.

The Minneapolis teen has a pre-trial hearing at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29.
