Plymouth, Edina Men Charged with Meth Possession

Police say Michael Thomas Fann of Plymouth and Tyler James Hamilton of Edina were arrested in a Bloomington hotel room with methamphetamine.

Two men, one from Edina and one from Plymouth, have been charged with methamphetamine possession after police say they found the two men with the drug in a Bloomington hotel room.

Tyler James Hamilton, 27, of Edina, and Michael Thomas Fann, 26, of Plymouth are each charged with felony fifth-degree drug possession, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaints, signed by Bloomington Police Detective Cullan McHarg, police learned that a woman with a local address had paid cash to check into the Days Inn on Normandale Boulevard on Oct. 30. The woman had been arrested on drug charges several times in the last few years.

An officer saw a car registered to a man with previous drug arrests pull into the hotel’s parking lot. Two men got out and went to the woman’s room.

The officer knocked on the room door, and one of the men, later identified as Fann, answered and said that the woman, whom he identified as his girlfriend, wasn’t there.

The officer came into the room, and two other men appeared from the bed and nightstand area. The two seemed surprised and nervous, according to the complaint.

One of the two men was identified as Hamilton, the owner of the car in the parking lot. He and the second man had their hands in their pockets, and the officer asked them to remove their hands.

As the officer spoke to the three men, Hamilton put his hands in his pocket again, and appeared to be under the influence of “some substance,” according to the complaint. Hamilton told the officer that he had a syringe in his pocket; the officer located the syringe, which contained a liquid that later tested positive for methamphetamine, the complaint says.

A further search of the room turned up a scale and a pipe, along with crystal methamphetamine in a nightstand drawer, according to the complaint.

Hamilton admitted that he had been using methamphetamine “off and on” since he was 18, and that he had injected the drug in the bathroom just before the officer knocked on the door, the complaint charges.

Fann admitted that he had snorted some of the methamphetamine in the nightstand drawer earlier in the day, according to the complaint.

Hamilton was convicted in 2011 of felony drug charges, and Fann has several drug cases pending in Hennepin County.

Both Hamilton and Fann have been released from custody, Hamilton on a $7,500 bond and Fann on a $10,000 bond. Hamilton has an omnibus hearing scheduled Jan. 3 and Fann Nov. 30, both in Hennepin County District Court.
