Boot Camp Teaches Parents How To Lobby For Schools
Three large school districts in the metro area and Parents United for Public Schools will offer a 3-part series for parents who wish to effect change at the legislature.
Three of the largest school districts in the metro area are partnering with the parent advocacy group Parents United for Public Schools to offer a 3-part series for parents who wish to effect change.
Robbinsdale Area Schools, Osseo Area Schools and Hopkins Public Schools will host the School and Student Advocacy Boot Camp, presented by Mary Cecconi, director of Parents United.
“As a parent volunteer, I really enjoy helping out at my children’s schools, but a few years ago through a Parents United event I began to learn how I could have a profound impact on education by becoming involved at the levels where laws are made," said Mary Ellen DeBois, a parent of four District 279 Students. "I believe with a little training, many parents will find that with minimal time and effort they too can have an impact on the education issues that will impact their students for years to come.”

Parents from Robbinsdale Area Schools, Osseo Area Schools and Hopkins Public Schools have coordinated the Boot Camp together with Mary Cecconi, executive director of Parents United for Public Education.
Cecconi’s political acumen, contacts in the education field and understanding of education policy issues have helped parents and community members across the state get past the myths to the realities of declining funding in the context of increasing costs and expectations. She has worked as a champion for children as a teacher, school board member, parent volunteer, levy campaign chair, statewide legislative committee member and volunteer parent lobbyist.
