Why did you become a para for the Wayzata School District?

Rieke: "I started working in the Specially Designed Classroom program at Wayzata West Middle School 13 year ago while still attending college. I fell in love with the kids, school and staff and knew there was no turning back. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I didn’t have the wonderful opportunity to spend each and every day with them!"

What do you do as a para?

Rieke: "On a daily basis, I attend general ED classes, assist with personal care and help implement curriculum and behavior plans for students. I take notes for students who cannot write and read to students who cannot read. Every day is a new adventure for me."

What are some misconceptions people have about paraprofessionals?

Rieke: "I feel a lot of people have misconceptions that we are uneducated individuals and that we sit in the back of classrooms and do nothing."

What are the biggest challenges of your job?

Rieke: "The biggest challenge I have every day is dealing with individual behaviors that vary from day to day and student to student. I overcome these challenges by staying focused, staying positive and smile--tomorrow is another day. I take one day at a time."

Why are paraprofessionals important and needed in education?

Rieke: "Students with special needs would not be able to fully participate in mainstream classes or fieldtrips without paraprofessionals. We support the learning environment."
