Wayzata Sports: Athletic Acheivements Abound

Here's a roundup of Wayzata Schools sports teams and athletic achievements.

The following is from the Wayzata School District website: (in bold and italics are upcoming tournaments/meets so mark your calendars!)

Girls' Nordic Ski Wins Section Title, Conference Championship

The Girls' Nordic Ski team placed first in the Section 2 meet Feb. 9 at Theordore Wirth Parkway. The team is Lake Conference champions.

The girls will compete in the state meet Feb. 16 at Giant's Ridge. Alayna Sonnesyn placed first overall.

Placing for Wayzata:  Alaynna Sonnesyn, 1st place; Marit Sonnesyn, 3rd place; Nicole Schneider, 5th place; Mata Agre, 9th place; Anna French, 12th place; Mackenzie Keller-Miller, 13th place. Also racing for Wayzata: Lauren Farquhar, Kristine Keller-Miller, Emily Holscher, Michaela Keller-Miller, Jessie Kay, Bryn Balls-Barker, and Jessie Hermann.

Wrestling Wins Conference Championship

The Trojan Wrestling team claimed the 2011-2012 Lake Conference Championship. Wayzata defeated their three conference opponents:  52-19 against Minnetonka, 37-28 against Eden Prairie and 40-30 against Hopkins.

The Trojans will compete in the section team meet Feb. 18 at Mound Westonka.

Dance Team Wins Section Championship

Wayzata High School hosted the Section 2AAA Championship Feb. 4.

The Trojets placed first in Jazz and 2nd in Kick. Wayzata qualified in both events for the State AAA Meet, which will be Feb. 17 and 18 at the Target Center.

Jazz will be  Feb. 17 and Kick will be Feb. 18. Doors open to the public at 11:15 a.m.

Wayzata Athletes Sign Letters of Intent 

It was a big day for several Wayzata High School athletes Feb. 1. Four seniors signed letters of intent to compete in their respective sports next year.

The following students signed:  

• Mark Hoof in soccer at Air Force Academy
• Ben Lauer in football at University of Minnesota
• Ryan Poppitz in baseball and football at Concordia University
• Alyssa Stolt in track and field at the University of North Dakota 

Trojan Golf Coaches Named Coaches of the Year

Wayzata Boys' and Girls' Golf coaches, Allan Christopherson and Mike Schumacher, were named AAA Golf Coaches of the Year by the High School Golf Coaches Association. 

The Boys' Golf team, coached by Christopherson, won their fifth overall state title in 2011. It was their third title under Christopherson. 

The Girls' Golf team, coached by Schumacher, won their first state title in 2011.
