Wayzata's Sarah Burnham Wins State Golf Title

Also: The Trojan boys team placed second in the state tournament.

Wayzata’s Sarah Burnham took first in this week’s AAA state golf championship.

The junior’s score of 140 tied New Prague’s Kenzie Neisen, making the pair co-champions.

Their score set a new low-score record for big schools, according to the Star Tribune. The 140 was one stroke better that the old record, set by Cretin-Derham Hall’s Celia Kuenster last year.

The new record came despite rain delays Thursday at Bunker Hills.

The other Wayzata golfer in the tournament, junior Jessica Nelson, tied for 24th with a score of 166.

In the boys’ competition, Wayzata took second in team results. The Trojans’ 610 points put them just a stroke behind champion Eden Prairie.

Junior Jack Holmgren led the way for Wayzata. He shot a 148 that earned him second place.

Others in the tournament were:

  • Eighth grader Van Holmgren, tied for 15th place, 152 points
  • Junior Tom St. Martin, tied for 17th place, 153 points
  • Sophomore Will Holmgren, tied for 34th place, 157 points
  • Freshman Daniel Chi, tied for 48th place, 162 points
  • Sophomore Grant Rahja, tied for 54th place, 163 points
