Plymouth Employees Make Sandwiches To Feed the Hungry

Bread, meat, cheese and a Ziploc bag – that’s what it takes to brighten someone’s day. During their lunch breaks Aug. 7, 24 city of Plymouth employees from across the organization volunteered their time to do just that – by making sandwiches for people in need.

It’s known as the Sandwich Project, a grassroots organization that utilizes time and monetary donations of volunteers to feed the hungry. A variety of non-profits and other organizations work to feed the homeless and those who are less fortunate during the holiday season. According to the organization’s website: "The Sandwich Project was established with the other days in mind." With the help of volunteers, it helps to feed about 4,500 people per week through various shelters and food shelves.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the City of Plymouth’s volunteer program, Volunteer Coordinator Jackie Maas found employees who were willing to help the cause. Volunteers individually packaged a total of 350 sandwiches.

Building Official Joe Ryan was able to secure a donation of 32 loaves of bread from the Sara Lee/Taystee Bakery Outlet in New Brighton, in addition to gift cards from Target and Cub which were used to purchase the meat and cheese. Maas also received cash donations from former and current staff.

Her favorite part about the effort was the camaraderie that employees were able to build. “This is a group of people who probably never spend any time together,” said Maas, “and they did something good over their lunch hour. And it was easy.” Maas plans to organize another event in about six months.
