We have to make people aware that our State is run by public employee Unions and we need court casesRead More like today which ruled that the California Teacher Tenure rules are unconstitutional so that we can change laws and vote people out of office who do not represent the interests of the public who pay the taxes.

Something that is interesting to note is that high school grads are going to four year universitiesRead More and studying subject that isn't marketable. While on the other hand you have people getting vocational training at vocational schools that essentially guarantees them a job out of school that will make them 'x' amount of money. So it isn't that college degrees are worthless, some are. It is also said that sometimes trade school is the right choice! I agree with all of you, but once again they are making the lives of this area difficult. It wasn'tRead More our fault that we had to move our kids to a school away from our neighborhood school. We would have rather kept them there, but the environment and enrichment was not there. Cedar Island yes, Oak View no. It will be better and I support the change, However just because someone made an oops and forgot to stop letting kids into another school doesn't make it just an easy decision. It is a unique situation and they have only come up with 2 options. 1-Move a boundary or 2-move the open enrolled kids. There are other options and the board wanted to hear them however, the district officials just gave them 2. They just said they won't work or there isn't time. There is no long term planning in this district and they are messing with too many families. Basswood has been full for a while but they opened enrolled at least 20+ kids this year. There are other full schools too but they hesitated to mention them at the meeting because of all of this. What a mess.

Superintendent Mcguire's (and her Administration) handling of this issue has been secretive andRead More non-transparent from the beginning. Many people have begun to question her judgement and executive abilities. Wither her relationship with many parents now destroyed, her ability to lead this District is now in jeopardy.

It's a joke

This is a chance for the school board to get the entire district back on track and look at some longRead More range planning instead of shuffling kids around for a 1 year fix. Let's all pause for a second, review all alternatives and options, and then make the best informed decision as representatives of District 279 now and for the next 5 to 10 years.
Lee January 15, 2014 at 08:04 pm
Matt - part of the issue is that we don't have time to pause. It seems that the board already madeRead More its decision based on the reaction thus far, and the fact that there is a scant two weeks between the public meetings and the final vote.
Mikhail Dzhon January 18, 2014 at 12:31 am
The superintendent is trying to ram her liberal agenda down our throats, and the board is followingRead More her lead. It is time for Dr. Mcguire to find a new job.

Mark Kulda- I just wanted to comment that you are partially correct when you say the 2008 parentRead More group only got 1 member on the Board. You are correct that Dean Henke was the only one elected in 2008, from the Dist279United group. However, the following year, one of the founding members and the treasurer of that parent group were elected onto the School Board. Therefore, 3 members of the Dist279United Parent Group, are current members of the 6 member Board.

I'm confused. Basswood is overcrowd and they need to move some kids to other schools. If censusRead More area 284 gets their way and they are left in Basswood, who moves and where do they go? Why is this area more important than any other area in Basswood? This area is between areas that now go to Oakview. Seems like a no brainer to move this area.
Lee January 16, 2014 at 08:45 am
Dan - I dont' pretend to have all (or any!) of the answers, but among the suggestions I have heardRead More were to a) expand Basswood, either temporarily (via trailers) or permanently; b) stop open enrolling kids and let the kids who live in the district stay in their school, perhaps shifting those kids to their regular schools (or perhaps simply refusing future open enrollees would be enough); c) find temporary solutions to the overcrowding for the time being until the grade reconfigurations work themselves out (which should result in fewer kids in Basswood as 6th grade moves to the Jr. High.); or d) build or acquire additional school space in the areas that are growing and feeding into Basswood (west of Vicksburg/Fish Lake Road, etc.) I have no idea if they would work, or if they are affordable, but it does not appear they were considered. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Marty, before we change boundaries, how about the kids that currently live in the existing OVRead More boundaries and open enroll at BW be transferred back to OV? Let them be the first to support their new school. And any other students who open enrolled from other D279 schools and other districts would also have to leave Basswood before any current BW residents. That solution would pretty much eliminate the need to move Census Area 284 to OV. Why wasn't this even a consideration?
Adam Benjamin January 19, 2014 at 08:51 pm
Marty - as a parent in Census 284, I agree with the sentiment and appreciate the welcome. For theRead More proposed adjustments to be successful, lots of goodwill will be needed as a whole new culture and community is built at OV. I think the immediate need and concern for us (284) is coming to grips with the proposal to move to OV, how they came to this proposal as their only option, and the the manner in which this was communicated and handled. We are fighting hard to make this a public debate and encourage the district to develop and share with all of us their long term vision and plan. Hopefully, this spirited debate will help make 279 better.
