Wayzata Central Middle School sixth graders are honing their math skills and helping fill a local food shelf at Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners.
For the 14th consecutive year, Wayzata Central Middle School sixth grade math teachers Lisa Geinert, Dan Nielsen and Tanya Ravenholdt will have more than 300 of their students adding up discounts and tax at their school grocery store. This week students not only learned how to use math in a real world setting, but helped stock the food shelves for Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners in Plymouth. The nonprofit partnered with the school, giving them a list of items that are in demand for those in need. Armed with their own shopping lists, students each had an individualized task of finding items that fit a specific sales tax and discount. The Plymouth-based nonprofit organization Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners won the coveted top spot this week for getting the most money from charitable donations on the charity-giving site givemn.org and on the annual "Give to the Max Day" Nov. 1
This Plymouth teen was voted Minnesota’s Top Senior High Volunteer for 2010.

Peter Larson can’t remember a time when his family wasn’t involved in some form of volunteering. That spirit of caring for others, whether through school, church, or in the community, has helped him become who he is today. “Without my family’s support, I don’t think I could do the work I’ve done,” Peter said. During the years, Peter, 17, has participated in a variety of volunteer work including cleaning up roads, Vacation Bible School, mission trips and building a bike shelter. Through his church he had a chance to work on a Habitat for Humanity house.
