Oakwood Elementary Has Annual Family Service Night

The elementary school event had 375 participants creating volunteer projects for the community.

Oakwood Elementary School hosted its fourth annual Family Service Night Nov. 2. Oakwood Principal Dennis Grasmick said he believes Family Service Night provides an extraordinary way for the school community to demonstrate kindness in action, and teaches children that everyone can contribute.  This year’s event brought in 375 parents and students who built birdhouses, contributed to a clothing drive, created “Night-Night” comfort bundles, Kids Helping Kids, letters to soldiers, Locks of Love, sandwich station, senior station and toys for rescue animals. Families created 49 birdhouses; collected 50 large bags full of clothing; created 43 blankets and 43 bundles of blankets, stuffed animals and books for Sojourner Project, a battered women’s …

Wayzata Students Advance To Global Tourney

Four Wayzata Public School teams will advance to the global Destination Imagination tournament in May.

According to a Wayzata School District press release: Following the Destination ImagiNation state tournament April 14 at Jackson Middle School in Champlin, four teams from Wayzata Public Schools qualified to compete at the Global Finals Destination Imagination tournament May 23-26 in Knoxville, Tenn. The four teams competing in the Global Finals are the following: • The Permanent Markers from Oakwood Elementary took first place in the elementary level for Challenge C, Coming Attractions. Plymouth's Oakwood Students Build Lego Lead

Rookie Oakwood Lego League team takes first at state Lego League tournament.

From the Wayzata School District website: Team Friendly Intergalactic Robotics Experts or Team FIRE took top honors at the First Lego League (FLL) Minnesota State Tournament in Robot Performance and in Technical Design. The first-year team finished eighth overall in state competition. Team FIRE is a team of Oakwood Elementary students. First place in these categories at the state tournament is unprecedented for a rookie team so young. Team FIRE members are fifth grade students Abby Kassmir, Elizabeth Mack and Ava Monro and third grade students Charlie Kassmir, Michael Layne, Ben Mack, Isaac Monro and Henry Strom. Wayzata Students Advance To State D.I. Tourney

Seven teams from the Wayzata Public School District advance to state Destination ImagiNation tournament.

After the completion of the Destination ImagiNation West Metro Regional Tournament in February, seven teams from Wayzata Public Schools will advance to compete at the State Destination Imagination tournament Saturday, April 14, at Jackson Middle School and Champlin Park High School. Overall, six teams earned first place awards and two of the teams earned the Renaissance Award for outstanding design engineering or performance. The Permanent Markers, fifth grade team from Oakwood Elementary and The 7 Oodle Noodles, fourth grade team from Oakwood Elementary, earned first place and Renaissance awards. Additions Proposed For Four Wayzata Elementary Schools

Today's Wayzata School Board work session includes discussing student population growth and possible additions to Oakwood, Greenwood, Sunset Hill and Birchview elementary schools.

Right-sizing several elementary school buildings in the Wayzata School District is up for discussion at a 3:30 p.m. School Board work session today. According to the district, elementary buildings are most efficient if they have about 24 to 26 classrooms for capacity. That includes one art room, one music room and one gym. Only three of Wayzata elementary buildings meet this 24 to 26 classroom criteria: Plymouth Creek, Kimberly Lane and Gleason Lake. Four elementary school buildings are smaller than the 24 to 26 classroom size: Oakwood, Greenwood, Sunset Hill and Birchview. If the district decided to add elementary classroom space, it would make the most sense to add to those facilities that already have support space available and the …

Monica - I have been asking the same questions to the district for 5 + years now - since their last boundary adjustment. The answer has always been similar 1) it takes 3-5 years to build a school 2) We want to honor the money that has been spent on these buildings already - meaning that they are in really good shape and 3) we have excess capacity at the southern schools and we will continue to …   more ›
