Study Gives Lake Plymouth-Area Schools Uneven Grades for Achievement Gap

A study by the Minnesota Campaign for Achievement Now graded all public schools in the categories of student performance, subgroup performance, performance gains and achievement gap.

Plymouth-area schools are doing unevenly in terms of student performance, and students of color are in most cases doing worse than white students, according to a new study.  While Minnesota's public schools excel in test scores, the achievement gaps between white kids and students of color, and between low-income and high-income students, are still significantly larger than national averages. Statewide, black and Latino eighth-graders lag 37 percentage points behind their white peers in math. Low-income eight-graders trail their richer classmates by 32 percentage points. In a March report, the Minnesota Campaign for Achievement Now (MinnCAN) sliced and diced public school data and published "report cards" for every school and district in…

District 281 Bus Driver Fired After Asking Student to Pick Up Gun

A Metropolitan Transportation Network bus driver was fired after asking a Robbinsdale Middle School student to bring a gun onto the bus.

A Metropolitan Transportation Network bus driver has been fired after stopping at an intersection and asking a seventh-grade Robbinsdale Middle School student to pick up a gun and bring it on the bus. The incident occurred on Nov. 8 around 8 a.m. The district immediately took action after the driver notified school employees about the weapon. Fridley Patch reported that Metropolitan Transportation Network owner Tashitaa Tufaa said the driver ignored "very huge signs" inside the bus that prohibit drivers from stopping alongside the road to pick up items. "Even if they see a $20 bill, they cannot pick it up," Tufaa said. "They are supposed to call their supervisor immediately." Instead of calling a supervisor, the bus driver continued on the…

Sonnesyn Elementary Gets 'Buzzy' Raising Money

The school's principal promised to dress up like a bee if students raised more than $300.

During a recent book fair Sonnesyn Elementary School students were busy raising money and keeping their principal "buzzy." The school raised $573.44. The incentive was prompted by new principal Leia Ward who set goal levels for the student community, which were surpassed, for a recent coin collection during its book fair. The coins were to help earn books for classrooms. Ward set four different goal levels. The first level was if students collected $75 worth of coins she would play outside with the students during recess. If students raised $150 she would sing a song on the morning announcements. If students raised $225 Ward would color her hair black and yellow for the day, in honor of Sonnesyn's mascot, the bee. But if students raised $…
